The festive season might not be an obvious factor of erection problems, but actually, many of the common triggers of erectile dysfunction are an inevitable part of most peoples’ Christmas. Last year, sales of ED medication were 60% higher in the run up to Christmas than they were during the rest of the year.
Christmas can be stressful. With the whirlwind of presents, parties and visiting relatives, we can all get worked up. Stress releases adrenaline and cortisol, both of which can give your libido a hammering. The arteries narrow when we’re stressed, which can contribute to problems getting or maintaining an erection.
Take time out to destress. Whether it’s ducking out of a family gathering to relax, or taking a few extra minutes for yourself during the day, self-care is extra important.
Many of us drink more around Christmas. We meet up with friends and family, head to parties and are sometimes more prone to treat ourselves to a drink in the evening. However alcohol is a depressant which can hit your sex drive. Alcohol also decreases blood flow, making it more difficult to get an erection.
If you take medication for erectile dysfunction, make sure you read the packet carefully before drinking. Many ED treatments are not advised for use with alcohol. Drinking can reduce their effectiveness, and can have side effects including low blood pressure, dizziness and heart palpitations. If you’re not sure, speak to one of our online Doctors.
