Choosing how and what to feed your baby can be a very difficult choice. For many women, who can’t, or don’t wish, to breast-feed, formula is a great, healthy alternative to breast milk. For others, a combination of both works well, with the formula milk giving them flexibility of when to feed. Any parent or caregiver can give formula at any time, so Mum’s entire routine doesn’t have to revolve around baby’s hunger. But how do you pick which one?
What stage is your baby at?
Babies need different nutrition at different stages of their growth, so make you’re buying the correct stage. Formula is usually categorised by age, and the age bands tend to be the same across different brands.
For premature babies, you need Stage O, such as SMA Gold Prem 2 Formula, which helps small pre-term babies put on weight. Stage 1, like Aptamil 1 First Milk Powder, covers newborns up to 6 months old. Stage 2 is for 6 months to 1 year old. We love HiPP Organic Follow On Milk Powder. Finally, there’s Stage 3, like Aptamil Read to Feed Growing Up Milk, which covers 12 to 36 months, and is ideal for fast growing toddlers.
Does your baby suffer with reflux?
Some babies struggle to keep milk down, which can be very distressing for the parent. If this is your baby, try a comfort milk, like HiPP Comfort Milk, which is gentle on small tummies and is a thicker formula which can help it stay down and keep your baby feeling full for longer.
Does your baby have allergies?
Many babies have an intolerance to cow’s milk. If this is the case for your baby, choose a lactose free or hypoallergenic milk, such as Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Lipil 1 Lactose Free Formula.
Does your baby seem to never be full?
Does your little one seem to insatiable, and always in need of another feed? Hungry Baby Milk is designed for those who need more food, wake regularly for night feeds or need more to get them through a growth spurt. The formula takes longer to digest, so keeps baby feeling full. We like SMA Extra Hungry Infant Milk.
