How common is herpes?
Herpes can be very common in adults, especially in the form of cold sores. Anyone who is sexually active can contract genital herpes.
How is herpes caught?
Herpes is contracted via skin-to-skin contact. When a contagious area touches skin with a small break, the virus can be passed on. Genital herpes can be contracted from someone who does not present with any symptoms. There are no recorded cases of people getting herpes from toilet seats, bathtubs, sheets or any other inanimate objects.
What are the treatments for herpes?
Herpes cannot be cured, but symptoms can be shortened. A treatment such as Aciclovir is used during an outbreak to shorten the duration and severity. A local anaesthetic ointment may also be prescribed to soothe the pain and irritation an outbreak can cause.
